Refurbishment

E&O's core business of property development is more than just designing and building properties that cater to the aspirational lifestyle of its discerning customers. It extends to seeking appreciation of beauty and refinement, and such has been illustrated in E&O's successful efforts in refurbishment of the famed Eastern & Oriental Hotel and Lone Pine Hotel in Penang.

A hotel of old, colonial charm with the finest traditions of comfort and service, the Eastern & Oriental Hotel in George Town, Penang was established in 1885 by the Sarkies Brothers. E&O Group undertook the meticulous refurbishment and upgrading of the heritage E&O Hotel in the late 1990s. After major works to restore it to its original grandeur, the E&O Hotel was relaunched on 3 April 2001, and has since regained its foothold as the grand dame of heritage hotels, the heart and soul of social life in Penang.

The Lone Pine Hotel, the oldest beach hotel that was established in 1948 along Penang island's famed Batu Ferringhi tourist belt, was similarly circumstanced. Through a well-conceived and carefully planned renovation and expansion effort in 2009/10, Lone Pine Hotel was rejuvenated with 90 stylish rooms and suites, fringed by rows of its original lofty casuarina trees.

The successful refurbishment and expansion of Lone Pine was recognised by the architect fraternity at the Malaysian Institute of Architects (PAM) bi-annual awards for architectural design excellence in 2012.

In 2012, E&O acquired Princes House along Kingsway, a prime freehold office property in central London, in the prestigious Borough of Westminster. E&O is converting and refurbishing this 1920s neo-classical building into a total of 54 units comprising 20 residential units and 34 serviced apartments. The 34 serviced apartments are slated for en bloc sale to institutional buyers that have also drawn interest from international serviced apartment providers keen to extend their brand to the highly sought-after Kingsway address.
